How to promote my book with least ego?

I’m way over me.  A subject that bores me.

But I do want to promote my new book’s ideas and solutions.

Almost every idea and solution in Sustainable Food is someone else’s.

The book is really about other people, other ideas, the little critters and plants and all the wonders that make our food.

It’s just reviving and repeating what ancient cultures, peasant cultures, farming cultures developed.  So its fair that they – and all the wonderful people alive and doing these things today – are given a voice in the discussion of the book.

My best device to turn attention to the people and ideas that the book gives a credit to, rather than to me, is to not to do any television about it.

The next best device is to have conversations with others about the book.  So I’m arranging events at bookshops, cafes and places where local food and the gardeners who grew it may bring their food, speak, be acknowledged, and given a voice in the conversation there about the book. The events will begin on Tuesday 16 October and finish on Tuesday 13 November.  A  list will be published on this blog.

And my experience of tours of my house, Sydney’s Sustainable House, is that I learn about terrific ideas from people who visit and speak.  Over 19,000 people have been there and I’m confident from that experience that it’s when people talk and are heard by others that they gain most confidence to do new, sometimes scary, things – such as to do new things to love our Earth back to health.

Fingers crossed these devices will keep my ego in a box.  But, as George Orwell wrote in his essay, Why I write, any writer’s ego will be the main player behind their words – what matters is how the writer submerges it; see the earlier post.

Do you have any suggestions – they’d be very welcome.

Let’s talk?  Here or at one of the events would be terrific if you have a moment.

ibika, thanks for asking this: there are two ways to order the book: preorder and pay now here where you’ll get a discount: http://www.newsouthbooks.com.au/isbn/9781920705541.htm; or go to a local bookshop and order one from their stock when it arrives – probably the second week of October or so. Enjoy, Michael
