Nuts n tough things in compost . . . do they go?

Elizabeth, who uses the road garden compost bins, emailed me, asking:

Can I put these things in the composting bins?

avocado seeds
pistachio shells (and other nut shells)
coffee grounds
mango pips
olive pips

And, I answered, “Yes, all those can go in.”

They take a while longer but they decay.

And Council’s Helen Bradley, Senior Project Coordinator , Waste Services, who works with us on the bins every second Friday , said:

Yes as Michael mentioned the seeds and pips are fine in the compost – they just take a little longer to break down than say fruit and veg peel, but it is great to have diversity of materials in a compost – you then get a better compost out at the other end.

The City does run free compost and worm farming workshops for local residents – the new dates for the first half of 2011 should be on line before Christmas. City of Sydney residents are currently eligible for a free compost bin or worm farm at the end of the workshop.

And so it goes,
