TAFE and I are working together to give skills to people in Sydney who are doing it tough, whether young or old, and on the ‘edge’ of things. We’re offering a course to show how to use energy and water, how to grow food in streets, work with cafes, councils, business and locals and what to do to get more food where we live and work.
We’ll make a boarding house sustainable for food, energy, water and sewage.
We’ll conduct a waste audit of a refuge in the inner city. We’ll build a vertical garden, a road garden, split a bee hive, set up and manage public composting.
The aim is to find and invent jobs for those who finish the course and create a new skill sector in the city – the urban farmer who can help cafes cut their waste and business costs, improve soils, lift fertility and biodiversity and increase food security.
It’s the first time the course has been offered. We’re learning by doing. Watch this space . . . urban farmers are coming to a block near you!
Michael
Look forward to seeing the vertical garden
