Savouring another’s powers of observation

A  Sydney-living Aboriginal elder with powers of observation I can only dream of sent me this note today:

‘Had a wonderful thing happen a couple of days ago – the first really warm day we’ve had, and the lawn
underneath the Empress tree was black,    When I looked down, each blade of grass had a little black
native bee sunbaking on it.   They seemed to be enjoying it so much, turning around every couple of
minutes to get the sun on another part.   The area covered about 2 square metres, since then I can smell
the honey, but I haven’t looked for it yet, I don’t want to disturb them.’

cool. I’d luv to be an aborigine and native bees – 2 hives by my back door ;)

to get nature you have to live amongst it – like in a tent! he he

i have an idea for a people spring – “greens” led by indigenous elders rise up against corporate government and take over. uprooting coal rail lines, razing supermarkets and then learning to look for food at their feet. ra ra.

i heard you on philip adams re mines. i have the dubious pleasure of seeing the yellow smog drifting eastwards across the horizon, like over maitland and newcastle. beautiful?!

    ciao, terry
