Splitting my bee hive

On Monday 20 September at 10 am Peter Clarke will show me how to split my native stingless bee hive, set up the new (second) bee hive, and harvest honey.

It will only take about ten minutes.

A photographer (the wonderful Saima Ali who has done the terrific photos for the second edition of Sustainable House) will join us to get some  shots to show how it’s done.

Does anyone know someone who would like to video it for a little Youtube or to go on this blog?  If so, contact me on this blog, please.

If you would like to join us comment here and I’ll contact you.  I reckon we can take up to ten participants or so – first come, first served, so comment as soon as you can if you wish to join the fun.

Hi Michael, unfortunately I’m going to have to miss the hive splitting today due to some last minute work commitments. Dam shame, hopefully there will be a repeat performance next year. Sorry for the last minute cancellation everyone.
    Thanks and have fun.
    Tania.

Michael, Do you still have space, and, if so, can I come? I’d been looking into native stingless bees but thought they couldn’t live as far south as Sydney?

    Hi Michael,

My husband and I would be interested to come and see the beehive being split if you still have room. Also, we could film it – although can’t promise a professional looking product.

    Rhiannon

  26. Sounds like fun! While I also have a stingless bee hive, I don’t know how the splitting thing works, so would love to drop by to see. If works allows me the free time, I’ll also bring a Flip video camera…

  27. Michael says:

    Tania,
It’ll be great to see you on the day. I reckon splitting a bee hive is a great way to move with the season of growing things, Spring.
    See you then,
    Michael

  28. Tania Einberg says:

    Hi Michael,
I’d love to come see the inaugural splitting of the hive. Keenly waiting for my first hive to arrive in about two weeks so it would be great to see one in action.
