Peace Park Compost Bin Temperatures

Seven of the 14 public compost bins in Chippo are in Peace Park, one for each day of the week.

The 7 Park bins are named for each day of the week, Monday, Tuesday, etc.

By inviting people to put the waste in the bin which matches the day of the week  it’s intended the waste will be more evenly distributed across the seven bins.  After 7 months of the trial this appears to be working.

It was the bright idea of Sydney City Council’s Waste Coordination officer, Michael Neville, to name the bins this way.

The image shows the temperatures measured in the bins for some three months of the trial by Council’s Michael Neville and an assistant, Joel Fitzgerald.

Trends show the bins are mostly reaching high temperatures at or over 50 degrees, thereby achieving the high decay rate needed to manage the three tonnes of food waste going into each bin, and producing a tonne of soil from each bin for our road gardens.

Hot stuff; so far things are going well,
